Lecture :Valley Crossing Activity

Valley Crossing:Activity in our POM Session

Our Session started with another intereting activity,"The Valley Crossing"Today,By the demonstration of the valley crossing activity,I would like to throw some light upon an important  management concept of Team and Team Work, the concept which binds an orgnization together.

Activity Demonstration: Three people had to cross a valley together carrying a single wooden rod upon their shoulders. The Distance between one side of valley and other side was >one step and <2 steps. The Task was to cross the valley together with the wooden rod.

Choice of three people:Here i would like to ask my audience a question!Should the three people be chosen on the basis of similarity in their physique i.e. height, strength etc.?
Most of us would answer "yes" at the very first instance. But Do our organizations work in the same way?The answer is "No".Being a Part of a team or an activity is a matter of interest, knowledge and expertise.
In our task, three interested people cam forward and formed a group for the task. This kind of group is called Informal team, where people with common interests participate and contribute to the activity.
In organizations, this kind of arrangement is temporary and is called "task force". Organizations don't look at people, they look at work.Managers are solution designers and understand work very well.

Characteristics worth noticing for the team: All the three people in the activity exhibited same interests and had unity in achieving the goal.

Structuring the task: Task was structured in a manner so that the risk, pain and contribution of the three members was equal.
In Organizations also,All member roles are similar in terms of risk, opportunities.

Structuring the Team Roles: Communication is an important part of any group. In the task assigned, group exhibited instantaneous interaction.Managers look for broad results, not individual results. The task exhibited interlocking roles, thats why high level of interaction was required.
In organizations, instantaneous interaction is mandatory so that there are no unproductive hours leading to time lag in the project. Instantaneous feedback is an another mandate.Cohesiveness of a team is an important indicator of Best Performance and timely delivery of results.

So,Teams whether formal or informal, work together to achieve a cohesive well defined goal!

Logistics Industry in India: Challenges & Entrepreneurship Opportunities, our session at NITIE

BGyan session on "Logistics Industry in India: Challenges & Entrepreneurship Opportunities"

NITIE, Mumbai has always been proud of its Strong Alumni. People from NITIE have travelled miles and have done exceptionally well in their respective industries. One Such name is Mr. Rajesh Pednekar, Head Distribution, Pfizer Ltd. He is an alumnus of NITIE IM 1st Batch with more than 16 years of experience in Logistics and Supply Chain management. Mr. Rajesh has worked with leading MNCs and domestic companies in FMCG, Pharma, Food and Nutraceuticals with strengths in Logistics, Inventory Management, Distribution, Warehousing & Transportation, 3rd Party Purchase & Procurement, and Forecast Accuracy Improvement.

B-Gyan Committee of NITIE, Mumbai organized its first session of the season on "Logistics Industry in India: Challenges & Entrepreneurship Opportunities", the Guest of Honour being Mr. Rajesh Pednekar. It was a first session of its kind for the newly joined Batch Of 2014.

Mr. Rajesh brought in lots of insight into the sector owing to his vast experience having worked with several renowned organizations. He was a smooth talker and was easily able to capture the pulse of the audience. The session began with a brief introduction about logistics and revolved around challenges, Global opportunities coming up in this sector and the technologies adopted by the competitors in the market.

Mr. Rajesh introduced us to the topic. Logistics is basically the management of the positioning and flow of resources in order to meet the customers’ requirements. Logistics involves the integration of information, transportation, inventory, warehousing, material handling, and packaging. He discussed about the recent problems posed and developments in each of the above domains. With the advent of globalization, government policies and technology have begun to play a very crucial role in this sector. Mr. Rajesh aptly symbolized this with his quote “With every mouth are born two hands”, which simply meant that two hands can very well serve one mouth. He explained that he sees lots of manufacturing opportunities in India. To illustrate this, he compared Government policies of India to those of China. In China, there is “One Child Policy”, due to which the work force is rapidly reducing. There are 6 parents viz. the original set of parents along with the maternal and paternal grand parents, to back one child. This implies that a single house has 7 cash flows to bank upon. This automatically reduces an individual’s interest in job and hence poses challenge to the manufacturing sector there. As compared to China, in India, with growing population, we have an easy availability of low cost work force. Also, India has become the 3rd largest consumer market in the past 10 years. But, Climatic diversity poses challenges to the specialized supply chain. As an example, cervical cancer injections are delivered, as and when required because these medicines have stringent temperature requirements. Lots of technological advancements are much awaited in this area. Another challenge is the means of transport. In India, Railways are the most preferred ones. But due to the bounce back of recent passenger fare hikes by the government, the burden has shifted to this sector. Transportation of Goods by rail transport has become all the more costly. Also, with the availability of varied means of transport, Validation of Supply chain in India is another big challenge. Innovation is the need of the hour. He also discussed about Innovations in Logistics with examples from industry. Flipkart introduced cash on delivery to distinguish itself from rest of the online shopping sites but 3% of its revenue was lost because of reasons like non availability of people, change in addresses etc. a risk which he justified for the profits made. ’Gharpe’ came out with the unique idea to act in between the two parties and thus led to an increase in their profit margins.

Mr. Rajesh also talked about the existing practices and global trends. He sees a lot of growth in this sector in the upcoming years. I wish him all the best for his future. The session was very knowledgeable and worth remembering.

It’s true that our Alumni have set a benchmark in the industry for us to emulate!

Lecture 2(Khan Academy)

My management lessons from Khan Academy

Khan Academy as we all perceive is a non-profit educational organization which started off as a video library. The Founder of Khan Academy, Salman Khan used to provide remote tuitions to one of his cousins interactively using Yahoo Doodle images. Based on feedback from his cousin, additional cousins began to take advantage of his interactive, remote tutoring. Slowly he transitioned the remote tuitions to You Tube videos and progress began. Thus came into existence the Pillar in Education for Today’s World “The Khan Academy”.

I would like to intercept his Organization in terms of” Hierarchy of Plans”. Hierarchy of Plans is a widely used management concept. It refers to the broad purpose of an organization comprising of its Vision, Mission and Procedures adopted to achieve them.

Hierarchy Of Plans:

Every Organization starts with some idea and motive behind it. The Khan Academy started off as a non-profit organization. It works on “Hierarchy Of Plans” to cater to the niche motive of its existence. The Hierarchy of Plans comprise of the following:

o   Vision: Salman Khan started the academy with a vision of turning the academy into a charter school. Its Tagline “A free world-class education for anyone anywhere” talks a lot about its vision and mission.

o   Mission: Khan Academy is a non-profit organization with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere.

o   Objectives: Learning has no Barriers of age, community, caste, area of expertise etc. With this objective in mind, Khan Academy caters to the needs of all by providing knowledge about basic mathematics to college level calculus, e-commerce, biology, chemistry, economics and many more. It Comprises of the following:

o   Video Library with over 3200 videos in various topic areas and over 165 million lessons.

o   Automated exercises with continuous assessment provided for them

o   One To One tuitions are also provided based on data collected by the system.

o   Policies: To reach to a large audience, an organization adopts some policies to protect the data and information of its members and visitors. As Khan Academy provides online services, it becomes more crucial to protect the information of its visitors. Khan Academy values the privacy of its members and others who visit and use the Website and make it a priority to personally protect identifiable information that is obtained from individuals both online and off-line. To protect the privacy, especially of young children, Khan Academy puts in place certain features designed to help protect the personally identifiable information of children less than 13 years of age. Registration of children below 13 years of age is provided only on consent of their parents.

o   Procedures: The Various processes and procedures are followed by an organization to achieve its mission. The Khan Academy works as below:

o                         From Students’ Perspective:  Extensive video library, interactive challenges, and assessments are made available to students on internet from any computer with access to the web. Students are provided access to Complete custom self paced learning tool to make them learn at their own pace whenever and wherever they want. There is a dynamic system available to help the students with exercises and problems faced by them. For examinations purposes, each student is provided with customized profiles, points and badges to measure progress.

o                           From Teachers’ Prospective: Teachers, faculty and coaches have complete visibility about their student’s progress. They have been provided with facility to intervene in between to target the student’s progress. . They have an access to the whole database of their students’ details about their progress reports. Also A Real Time Class Report is generated subject-wise.

o                          Khan Academy Advantage:

1.    Every Problem is generated randomly, so there is plenty practice material and that too with hints for better understanding.

2.    Analysis is done on the basis of one’s browsing to know his/her interests better and assist him/her in finding the relevant information.

3.    It Provides a map of knowledge which shows all of one’s challenges, skills, and concepts. Suggestions are provided on the areas and skills to work on. Challenges are provided which cover combination of smaller concepts. Learning is a fun there!

4.    Appreciation is given on the basis of tracked upon performance of students in the form of badges. Some of the smaller badges are very easy to earn, but the higher badges might require years of work.

o   Future Plans: In November 2011 Khan Academy received a grant of $5 million from Ireland-based The O'Sullivan Foundation .The Fund will be utilized in expanding the teacher & faculty base, Extending content through crowd-sourced contributions, following a Wikipedia-style model and Developing curricula to help users blend the content with physical teaching through stem learning. The Academy is continuously catering to the needs in untouched areas of arts and history. As a result, it has recently appointed Dr. Steven Zucker and Dr. Beth Harris, both experts in their areas as their teaching faculty. YouTube video creators Vi Hart and Brit Cruise have also recently joined the teaching faculty. A series of summer school camps are planned to start in Northern California from June 2012 to test curricula for real-world schools.

With the study of the above Hierarchy of Plans, I have perceived that the organization has done really well in the past few years. It stands as a strong pillar in the area of education which has changed the whole idea of the education system and has catered to the needs of all. The organization is on the path of continuous Success with Miles to Go! Let us all join our hands with Salman Khan and Rethink Learning in his innovative style!
